Asthma is one of the most common diseases in childhood, affecting more than 6 million children in the United States, and is the leading cause for missed school days from a chronic condition.
Often, a child may wheeze ('high pitched whistling sound' when the child breathes) or say he can't catch his breath. Children with asthma also can have a persistent cough - especially with colds, exercise and laughing - as well as recurrent bouts of 'wheezy bronchitis' or pneumonia.
