WEDNESDAY, Sept. 17 (HealthDay News) -- Children who attended a daycare center as infants are 35 percent less likely than their peers to have asthma symptoms by age 5, according to new research.
The British study, published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, found those enrolled between age 6 months and 12 months were most likely not to develop the symptoms, experiencing a 75 percent reduction in asthma risk.
The same effect was not seen for other painkillers and experts have called for more research into the link as it may suggest a simple way to reduce the numbers of people suffering with asthma.
There are around five million people in the UK with asthma including 1.4m children.
Results of the study carried out by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network are published in the European Respiratory Journal and will be presented at the next Annual Congress of the European Respiratory Society in Berlin next month.
The researchers questioned over 500 adults with asthma and over 500 people without asthma about the use of painkillers
